By participating in the new "23 mobile things" I hope to enhance my value to the community of library users who ask for digital help and advice!
The first two sets of "23 Things on a Stick" helped very much with understanding digital "lingo". Completing those exercises helped me better engage with teens as well as assist, with empathy, adults! Pushing the envelope by digging deeper gave me greater confidence.
Thanks MN state multi-types for the opportunity. Woo Hoo! Libraries do a great job with little kids, but we have a ways to go with teens.
Was working in a bigger library on Saturday and had a conversation with a 12 year old who was checking out audio books. She said, "I don't have time to read a whole book, that's why I like poetry." It made me think about how much our teen and college grad children text. Texting is a lot like poems. Concise and to the point. I asked the girl if she had ever participated in a poetry slam? She was only at Thing 3!
It is fun to hear others tout the benefits of this
exercise.

My boss called several times this week to get
a little help with posting and making her avatar.
She was concerned that she would be "spitting
nails" soon, but I think it went well for her. It
is, of course, time consuming.

In conversation recently it was
mentioned to me that young people's
concepts of privacy might be quite
different than a librarian's.

We have policies in place to protect
the privacy of our patrons that some
who use Web 2.0 all the time might
consider "over-protective". Although
the privacy of our 2.0 users is under
their control (if they read the options
in fine print), we may need to point out
the "how-to".

Once we learn these things, there is no going back.
I wonder what percentage of businesses use
private wikis or MS Live office or Google docs
and such to communicate? Since we can communicate
with multiple people at once, these tools could be more
efficient, as long as folks are good at written communication.

Recently, our teenager said he was kinda sick of
MySpace and Facebook. It will be interesting to see
whether the "been there, done that" attitude shows
up as a phenomenon with other teens. Not sure
how one gauges what is fad and what is here for
the duration.MAWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11169091763405978971noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6946429759987771594.post-53639536690313874232008-06-07T12:15:00.008-05:002008-06-21T10:57:24.799-05:00Thing 1, Refresh, UPDATED, againSince a new session of 23 things is starting
and I have volunteered to be a coach... I don't
think we are tapping into a wiki's
utility for collaboration.

Then again, I joined the Pioneerland
library group because of something
posted on that wiki!

It is very fun to network with
other librarians! And it is interesting
to view the history pages of that wiki
to examine how our librarian entries
formed a sort of template each of us
mimicked.

Onward and upward.MAWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11169091763405978971noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6946429759987771594.post-13413822307058624922008-04-14T20:06:00.003-05:002008-06-02T10:49:44.635-05:00THING 22Now this thing I can do!

I PLEDGE TO KEEP WRITING
AND KEEP HONING THE SKILLS
LEARNED IN 23 Things on a Stick!

I am off to add more resources
to my RSS aggregator.

WOO HOO!MAWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11169091763405978971noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6946429759987771594.post-13539946814310357982008-04-14T19:16:00.006-05:002008-06-02T10:51:06.632-05:00THING 21Recently, someone I met in Guatemala
asked me to join a social networking group
called Good Tree. It appears to be a place
where non-profit organizations can get
support, recognition and money to
carry on. I understood 12.5% of the site's
revenue is donated to charities. All
they ask is that you use GoodTree as
your start page.

Gather seemed user friendly. It
was sort of like a magazine
with networking. Definitely felt
more sophisticated, for grown-ups.MAWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11169091763405978971noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6946429759987771594.post-89330064919281198112008-04-12T22:12:00.005-05:002008-06-02T10:56:52.390-05:00THING 20Facebook definitely feels "tighter" than MySpace.

I am giving Facebook a trial.
Nieces, nephews and relatives will befriend
me, right, by sympathy vote?

Had about a 50% success rate sending
friend requests . Succeeded in getting a
few "friends!" Joined a couple networks.

Went to some of the MySpace library
sites. My goodness, these sites can get
covered with busy-ness. Would be a
good place to practice graphic and
page design! Or maybe that's what we
are doing.

Is this ever good for associative thinking!
I could get lost and loose track of time
in a social networking
space, because of curiosity.

One thing leads to another and before
you know it, you can't remember your entry
place, except for the "back" button.MAWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11169091763405978971noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6946429759987771594.post-63487416480522700032008-04-11T16:19:00.017-05:002008-06-02T11:00:42.896-05:00THING 19, PODCASTINGA couple years ago my brothers and sisters
gifted me an 8GB Mp3 player. Shortly
thereafter I tried subscribing to podcasts with
an open source software called JUICE.
Google reader and the Firefox live bookmark
are more recently tried aggregator tools.

I looked into the podcast directories
listed in 23 THINGS. Here is an example
of an EASI podcast offered at Barrier-free IT
(this one is very serious, don't expect entertainment)

Does Course Content Need to be Accessible?

At the EASI web site I saw the word "vodcast"
which stands for video podcast. It looks like
the word "podcast" includes vodcasts.

Despite the fact that some aspects
of the EASI web site didn't
work right from my end, I found so
much useful information, I didn't care!
Case in point; look at this page! Most
useful for librarians who want to know
more about library accessibility issues
and solutions!

A vodcast uses the RSS concept but is
like TV on demand. It works on computer/TV
and players like iPod touch.

Look at FireAnt or iTunes to subscribe
to internet TV channels and podcasts/vodcasts.
Here's a link to a free 2007 BBC Newsnight
podcast at FireAnt.MAWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11169091763405978971noreply@blogger.com0
