Thing 3, RSS Depth-charge

Blogger recently added the option for
"My Blog List" which I have taken
advantage of. I tried a SpringWidget
for a little while on this blog, but it
wasn't as user-friendly as the blog
list option. One of the blogs I have
subscribed to has a "blog roll" too,
but the author has his private. Mine
is public.

One's blog can be the repository for RSS,
bookmarks and links, organized just like
you want, tagged and marked.

T'is a customized desktop and browser and a
librarian's dream-toy? An organizer's play land?

Thing 1, Refresh, UPDATED, again

Since a new session of 23 things is starting
and I have volunteered to be a coach... I think
it would be a good time to revisit the things from
1 to 23. Perhaps do ALL of the challenge exercises
listed at the end of each "thing".

I wonder what it takes to have a more
sophisticated avatar? Maybe a little animation?
Librarian Jan P has a great one from Meez.

I made this banner when I first started 23 things
and finally figured
out how to add it to the blog.
It got sorta fuzzy, but it is a wave on

the beach of "23 things on a stick".

I am wishing I could animate the heading.
This lady has some instructions for doing just that.

Today I added Feed Burner for statistics.
Now, I notice that all the time I spent getting
the orange RSS on the side was re-inventing
the wheel. That symbol would have been
added automatically had I used Feed Burner
in the first session of 23 things.

THING 22

Now this thing I can do!

I PLEDGE TO KEEP WRITING
AND KEEP HONING THE SKILLS
LEARNED IN 23 Things on a Stick!

I am off to add more resources
to my RSS aggregator.

WOO HOO!

THING 19, PODCASTING

A couple years ago my brothers and sisters
gifted me an 8GB Mp3 player. Shortly
thereafter I tried subscribing to podcasts with
an open source software called JUICE.
Google reader and the Firefox live bookmark
are more recently tried aggregator tools.

I looked into the podcast directories
listed in 23 THINGS. Here is an example
of an EASI podcast offered at Barrier-free IT
(this one is very serious, don't expect entertainment)

Does Course Content Need to be Accessible?

At the EASI web site I saw the word "vodcast"
which stands for video podcast. It looks like
the word "podcast" includes vodcasts.

Despite the fact that some aspects
of the EASI web site didn't
work right from my end, I found so
much useful information, I didn't care!
Case in point; look at this page! Most
useful for librarians who want to know
more about library accessibility issues
and solutions!

A vodcast uses the RSS concept but is
like TV on demand. It works on computer/TV
and players like iPod touch.

Look at FireAnt or iTunes to subscribe
to internet TV channels and podcasts/vodcasts.
Here's a link to a free 2007 BBC Newsnight
podcast at FireAnt.

BETWEEN Things

See that Big Beautiful RSS button (Really Simple Syndication)
in the right-hand column? That happened with
the son's help. (digital age: 16 years)

How? NOW GET THIS: Instructions, teenage style:

"Mom, go to Google. Type: 'HTML' in search box."

Well, "DAAH" or "D'OH!" per Homer Simpson.
(It's the
mimic/copy, trial & error method!
Digital beings do it ALL the time.)

We simply copied an example HTML text from this
tutorial
and grabbed the RSS picture from another spot.

SHAKE & BAKE.
(Do copyright laws apply here in the learning-to-blog world?
Answer: Mom, the copyright police can't look through everything!)

"Son, what happens to that RSS button if the website
we got it from is deleted?"
Response,"There will just
be an X in
the corner of an empty square."

I think
the same thing will happen on this blog if I
deleted my avatar on Yahoo.

Note that I figured out how to edit the italicized font.
Son helped me with that too. As
I suspected, I had
inadvertently
made italicized font part of the template.

On to THING 5.

See the "GAMES" link to Becky's Flickr
image-Sudoku in the right-hand column?
That's my first attempt to do THING 5!
Can you figure out how to play?

p.s. The word "PREFECTIONIST" above Ms. Avatar (who I moved because she was lost on the bottom of the page) was done on purpose to remind me not to get so serious or be too much of a perfectionist!
